Location: Belwood, OntarioE-mail: gcampbel@uoguelph.ca Occupation: Animal Technician, University of Guelph Height: 6' - 1" Weight: 185 Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario Date of birth: 01/15/59 Years running: 14 Years running ultras: 12 PRs: 5 km:18:00; 10 km: 37:00; 20 km: 1:17; 30 km: 2:00 Marathon: 2:54; 50 km: 3:54; 50 miles: 7:32; 100 km: 10:30 Shoes I run in: Nike, Adidas; usually discontinued models Favourite running surface: Trails, pavement Some ultras I have completed: 82 so far. All have been in the Ontario Ultra Series with the exception of the 1998 West Highland Way race in Scotland. Best performance: Whitby Tigers 50 km in May 1991. There was a torrential rainstorm and only the top three results were recorded. I came in 4th in 3:54 but alas, no official proof! Ultra achievements: Being the first North American to complete the West Highland Way race in Scotland. It is a 95 mile footpath through the rugged Highlands. It was quite a memorable experience although I went off course and ran 101 miles in 32:59. Ultra I would like to do but haven't yet: Marathon des Sables in Morocco across the Sahara desert. But I better improve at Niagara first! Typical training week: 50 - 60 km per week in winter. 80 - 100 km in spring to fall. Cross training with cycling, swimming and X-C skiing. Injury history: Groin pull in '89; lost 4 months of running. Rediscovered cycling though and when I healed, I did a few triathlons. Favourite ultra foods: Pizza! (even ran on haggis in Scotland!) Bananas, bagels and cheese, chips, Doritos. Favourite ultra beverages: Coke, water Things I like most about ultras: The great friends I have met on the courses and the friendships continue. Also love climbing hills in the trail runs. Things I hate most about ultras: Downhills after about 50 km. What got me started doing ultras: Curiousity. Figured, why not make the next "logical" step up from the marathon. Ultra heroes: Rolly Portelance, Doug Barber Favourite ultra quote: "Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" - Ron Gehl "I'm going in ultra car - you want a ride?" - Doug Barber Other comments: What a great sport; I have met so many good friends on both sides of the pond. It's a great fraternity. Feb 2000 |
