ONE-mail: nadeem97_00@yahoo.com Occupation: Political Strategist Height: 169 cm Weight: 110 lbs Birthplace: India Date of birth: 29 December 1978 Years running: 15 Years running ultras: 4 PRs: 400m -- 55 sec, 1 Mile -- 4:45, 3km -- 9:25, 5km -- 16:26, 8km -- 26:50, 10km -- 33:12, 21.1km -- 1:16:32 50km -- 4:26:50, 6hour -- 61.64km, 24hour -- 165.8km Shoes I run in: Mizuno Wave Maverick, Reebok Premier Favourite running surface: Roads, Track --- anything with a "solid" footing Some ultras I have completed: Toronto Ultra 50k, Sulphur Springs 50k, Kingston 6 Hour, Niagara 50k, Damn Tuff Ruff Bluff Run 50k, Conquer the Canuck 92.2k, Ottawa 24 Hour and Vulture Bait 50k Best performances: For ultra distances, it would have to be the 24 hour run --- did my first 100 Miler, stayed up through the entire night (reminded me of university days) and made some very good friends (runners and volunteers) Ultra achievements: Any ultra run where I am able to line up next to ultra greats like Ron Gehl, Monica Scholz, Rolly Portelance, Pat Sommers, Jim Morrison, Jim Newin, the Sarsons and many others. Ultra I would like to do but haven't yet: Ganaraska 50km, Haliburton Trail Run and JFK 50 Miler Typical training week: Tuesday -- Fartlek/Speed sessions, Thursday -- Steady 10km, Sunday -- About an hour run. Definitely not a poster child for ultra training. Injury history: I had a torn quad muscle when I first started doing longer distances (10km) in '91. IT bands gave me some problems with the 2004 ultra season. But other than that, I have been fortunate enough to stay injury free. Favourite ultra foods: Second best sight in ultra running (next only to the finish line) --- an aid station. With wonderful smiling volunteers and lots of food, can't go wrong with that. Pretzels, cookies, chips and drinks are all a treat! would like to see some chicken wings and fries though!! Favourite ultra beverages: water, flat coke and gatorade. Things I like most about ultras: Without a second thought --- the camaraderie that develops over relatively a short race or a long season. Times when we have a few of us running together for miles, nothing but the love of the sport pulling all of us together to the finish line. A feeling that I won't trade for anything in the world. Things I hate most about ultras: The first kilometer! Just thinking to myself that I have to do this "at least" 49 more times. What got me started doing ultras: The banana men! Two very accomplished ultra runners that I have a lot of respect for --- Gord England and Howard Parker. We were in the same running club and they suggested, back in 2000, that I should spice up my running experience. I had no idea what I was getting into but to this day I thank them for introducing me to the sport and the wonderful people affiliated with it. Ultra heroes: Someone whom I have never met --- Terry Fox. People I see on a regular basis --- Any runner who toes the line at an ultra event. Whether a runner is a first time ultra runner or a decorated post-marathoner, these distances are hard. A lot of thoughts go through one's mind in a race but it is the joy of crossing the finish line that keeps us fighting till the end. Ultra quote: "You can make someone run, but you can't make them believe in their running. That's something that comes from within." --- my dad who also happened to be my first coach. Other Comments: People ask me why do I do ultras? It is because of all of you! The participants of any ultra event make the race enjoyable and fun for all. I have made some amazing friends doing these races. The support and encouragement at any event is phenomenal. The confidence of trying new races and the attitude to push the envelope to see what can be achieved on any given day is what makes these events exciting. Nov 2004 |
