Shoes I run in: Nike Air Structure
Favourite running surface: Trail
Some ultras I have completed: 34 in Total; Niagara 50k and 50M; Slough of Despond; Sulphur Springs; Mississippi Trail; Dances with Dirt, MI; Halfway Lake; Little Bighorn, WY; Haliburton Forest; Vermont 50M; GNC Pittsburgh, 50M; Kentucky 50M; JFK; Texas Trail, Huntsville.
Best performances: In 1991 I commenced the year with a Marathon on my birthday and ran PBs in the Half Marathon, the Egg Nog Jog and at the Marine Corps Marathon in DC. Total Marathons that year: 10.
In 1994 I was on Chemotherapy until May 06. I ran 3 Marathons, 2 halfs and Around the Bay during that period.
In 1995 I completed a total of 33 races including 15 Marathons, 5-50kms, 7-50 milers and one 24 Hour run.
Ultra achievement I am most proud of: The Wild and Scenic Trail Run in the Little Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. I needed a time of 7:51:59 for a 50k distance. The start commenced at elevation 4,600 and climbed within the first 3 miles to 6,500 ft, opening up a vista above both sides of the Little Bighorn Canyon, bathed in blooming yellow and purple spring time flowers. This was the toughest 50k ever, but the most beautiful. A race I will do again after my return to North America.
Ultra I would like to do but haven't yet: I wonder if I am getting too old for a 100 miler, but Helen Klein still does them.
Typical training week: About 30 miles per week, trying to get a long run or race in during the weekend.
Injury history: Shin Splints. Hamstring in Buffalo 1992. Torn meniscus in the right knee 1998, successfully corrected by surgery.
Favourite ultra foods: Chocolate chip cookies.
Favourite ultra beverages: Water, Gatorade, Coke.
Things I like most about ultras: The camaraderie of the running community.
Worst Ultra Experience: The middle of the race, with no end in sight yet.
What got me started doing ultras: Curiosity.
Ultra heroes: Rolly Portelance, Don McNelly, Helen Klein, Jess Heroux.
Favourite ultra quotes: "The people that were dancing were judged insane by those that could not hear the music!"
"It was not very good, but it still beat sitting home gathering dust". - Comment by Jim Moses after an awful run.
