PRs: Qualified for Boston twice. Some ultras I have completed: 7 of the OUS series in 2007, and as I have just completed the JFK 50 miler, I guess I am now a semi-official Ultra Runner Best performances: I finished all of the races I have entered. Ultra achievements: Going back to ITT after some prodding from another ultra runner. Mostly just getting out there. Ultra I would like to do but haven't yet: The 3 day Lake Tahoe, and the Laugavegur Iceland 55km Ultra run. and maybe one day Haliburton Typical training week: Average 35 miles per week pre-event training. Although some people are trying to get me out to the weekend trail runs. Injury history: Touching wood, nothing too severe to prevent me from running and taking drugs. (Read that to mean not taking drugs for injury) Favourite ultra foods: Dulce and recently pretzels, but generally survive on gels. Favourite ultra beverages: Gatorade, water and always the beer after the race. Things I like most about ultras: The country, the textures of the trees, trails, the feel of air, and I am getting used to the mud. When I finally get fast enough I am able to talk to the people I run with, but usually I end up on my own so I like to stop and listen to the sounds. But mostly I like getting away from asphalt and cement. Things I hate most about ultras: Falling and the fear of falling on those rocks. But oddly enough the only times I do fall down is on the flats when I lose my concentration. What got me started doing ultras: Those people from Haliburton and the love of running. Most of the people in the series are inspiring and I like to drink beer after the events. Even training runs are more interesting in the trails. Ultra heroes: People who keep on running. All race directors who take time out to let me run in their backyards. Thank you. Anyone who wins and still talks to me. Ultra quote: Train the brain and the legs will follow. You can always do more than you think you can. It's all in the framing. And the will to win is not nearly important as the will to prepare. Thanks: to the gang who wrote the song that made me fall in love with a different type of running. Nov 2006 |
