Location: Yarker, OntarioWeb: www.montgomeryadventurewriting.com saratraining.blogspot.com Occupation: Institutional Research Analyst Year of birth: 1971 Started running: in my 20s PRs: 5k 20:19, Marathon 3:21 Shoes I run in: Trail: La Sportiva Fireblades, Crosslites and Skylites; Snowshoes: Dion 121 Favourite running surface: Rolling single-track through the woods Some ultra/trail events I have completed: ITT, Haliburton, Escarpment, Wakely Dam, Ganaraska, Mt Washington, Stone Cat, 5 Peaks, Mad Trapper and USSSA snowshoe races, multi-day fastpacks of Rideau Trail and Killarney’s La Cloche Trail Best performances: Any race where I dig deep and do my best. I’m learning to keep goals flexible enough so that the outcome can be good in at least some way. It’s such a lot of energy and effort; better to frame it as a success. Ultra achievements: Haliburton 50k ’08 I was having a rough day but held it together and felt strong at the end. Escarpment Trail just for surviving it. Ultras I would like to do but haven't yet: Rock and Ice Ultra coming up in March ’09. Also, I feel ready to move up to a 50M in '09 after thinking about it for a couple of years. My dream race is the Hardrock 100. Typical training week: Run a lot, mostly on trails, and make sure there is a lot of variety with long runs, tempos, hills, intervals, strength work, etc. I love the lifestyle of training. Injury history: Metatarsal issues in 2005-06 which took a long time to come around. Favourite ultra foods: Margarita Clif Bloks – a cocktail break on the trail! Favourite ultra beverages: During - water, Gu2o. After – a cold beer. Things I like most about ultras/trails: Getting into the woods and being part of nature. Things I hate most about ultras/trails: The first hour of a race, when it’s crowded and noisy and my body hasn’t woken up. What got me started doing ultras/trails: Some people just seem to ‘take’ to trails. I’m not sure why, but I’m lucky to be one of them. Running heroes: Derrick Spafford. Katharine Switzer, Dick Beardsley, Paula Radcliffe, Kara Goucher. Anyone who has done a 100 miler. Running quotes: ‘All the Mystic Ultras look exactly the same whether they’re running a marathon or a 100-meter dash. The only way you can tell they’re sprinting is the fire in their eyes.’ AND ‘Running to him was real, the way he did it the realest thing he knew. It was all joy and woe, hard as diamond; it made him weary beyond comprehension. But it also made him free.’ ~ both by John L. Parker Jr. Feb 2009 |
