Funeral services held in Saskatchewan
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (UW) - Tom Jewiss, a well-known Ontario ultrarunner and organizer in the 1980s and early 1990s, has died following a period of illness. He passed away peacefully on March 2. Funeral services were held March 6 in Saskatoon.

Born April 8, 1946 in Toronto, trained up to 100 miles a week at the height of his running career and was well-known in the Ontario Ultra Series, competing in many races and winning a number of them.

Among the races he organized and directed was the Sagamok 60Km. He was a course measurement expert and was the first Technical Coordinator of the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners.

Jewiss ran 161 miles, 979 yards, in the old Chelmsford 48-Hour Race, had a personal best of 111 miles, 1755 yards for 24 hours (recorded in the Hanmer race organized by the late Norm Patenaude, who was Jewiss neighbour in northern Ontario for a number of years. Other personal bests included 100 miles/18:20:26, 100Km/9:50, 50 miles/6:33:13 and 50Km/3:50:10.

JEWISS _Thomas Craig. Tom passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. A Wake will be held Friday, March 5 from 5:00 10:00 p.m. at St. Marten's United Church at 2617 Clarence Ave. S., Saskatoon, SK.

The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 6, 2:00 p.m. at St. Marten's Church. Tom was born in Toronto, ON. He obtained a Degree in Native Studies, a Masters in Environmental Science, his Law Degree from Osgoode Hall and was working on his Masters in Law when he became ill.

Tom is survived by his wife, Colleen Youngs; daughters, Spring (Samuon) Chhom, Adene Kuchera; sons, Shane Kuchera (Krystina), Kipp Kuchera (Veronica), Mehta Youngs, Rory Jewiss; his parents, Allan Ernest Jewiss and Olive Louise Robinson Jewiss; brothers, Bob (Joan) Jewiss, Ross (Peggy) Jewiss; and sister, Karen (Jim) Campbell; grandchildren, Chet and Cheya; nieces, Heather (Craig) Humber, Jennifer (Jack) Jewiss, Amy and Beth Jewiss, Emma Campbell, Maya Zaleski, Tracy (Donovan) Ernst; nephews, Benjamin Jewiss, Tyler and Dan Youngs, Adam Jewiss, Davis Ernst; mother and father-in-law, Alice and Clarence Youngs; sister-in-law, Janet (Michael) Zaleski; brother-in-law, Bob (Barb) Youngs; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and very special friends, Julie Van Vliet and the Linklater Family.

Tom's passions were his family, Aboriginal Law and Running. Tom worked internationally for the cause of Social Justice and will be missed by all that knew him, on either side of the debate.
