Hamilton, May 6, 2002. On Saturday, July 6, 2002, Gord and Trevor Harthun and Ed
Alexander will be starting out to cover 500 kilometers (310 miles) in eight
days on the Bruce Trail. A carefully
measured course of 62.5 kilometers entirely in the new City of Hamilton has
being laid out which will begin at Alexander’s house near Dundurn Castle,
proceed to the Harthuns’ house in Corktown just southeast of the downtown
Hamilton core, and then proceed westward to the Trail where it intersects Dundurn
Street and then follow it up through Ancaster, through the Sulphur Springs
Conservation Area, over to Dundas and up the trail to Webster’s Falls, and then
eastward over to Waterdown, turning back to the starting place along the
Grindstone Creek Valley and York Boulevard.
This run is being attempted on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society to
raise funds for their ongoing work and for their church, the Church of the
Ascension in downtown Hamilton.
The event has been organized
in such a way as to eliminate the need for aid stations and support vehicles.
Now in its third year, this
fundraising effort will have an added twist this year. In consideration of a minimum donation of
$100.00 per day to one of the named charities, members of the public are being
invited to join the trio on one or more days.
The effort is being sponsored by the Bank of
Nova Scotia which will be matching all donations to the
Cancer Society dollar for dollar.
A website has been established for the effort at http://www.deerhurst.com/fundraiser, where a course map, previous year’s accounts,
photos, and pledge form are also available. Pledges
and donations can also be made on-line as well as by email or by contacting Ed at 905-312-5204 or
