My interest in running began at age 65 when I was in Florida at a convention in 1986. I saw runners on the beach sweating and breathing hard. I felt sorry for them but somehow my interest was piqued so I tried it myself. On my first few runs I went about 100 metres - there was lots of pain, heart pounding and shortness of breath. Over the next days I tried again and finally was able to run 1½ km. I proudly and excitedly announced to my wife how far I had run. I feel different because of running - because of my participation in the sport I get to appreciate life in a way that non-runners do not. Rheumatic pain that I experienced 40 years ago has diminished after taking up running. I haven't had any illness in 14 years. My lifestyle, which includes daily exercises, is very disciplined. My diet is simple with little meat or fat. I credit diet, as prepared by my wife, for much of my success in the sport. During a marathon or ultramarathon I do not dwell on the possibility of not finishing. My motto is "If I start, I have to finish." Upon arriving at the finish line, I always feel like I've accomplished something again. My best year for running was 1998 when I completed 19 races and did over 3000 km, between training and races. I enjoy being in the company of other runners. They usually have simple tastes and don't ask questions about financial status. Rather they discuss upcoming runs, race experiences and finishing times at recent events. Running is something I need on a regular basis. I even dream about it at times. Many non-runners don't understand the attraction of the sport to me. They think I'm crazy. In recent years, I have usually been the oldest runner in a race but I have never been last to finish. |
