SAME OLD FACES, SAME OLD HEAT 50 km results | 50 mile results | 100 km results

Brian Teason and Daniele Cherniak returned to the scene of earlier triumphs along the Niagara River, and did so impressively.  Unfortunately for most other runners at the Niagara 100 km, 50 Mile, 50 Km Road Race last June 27, so did the heat of  previous years.  The race started in Niagara-on-the-Lake at the mouth of the Niagara River and followed the Niagara Parkway trail along the river to Fort Erie at the other end of the river, thence returning to the starting place, with the 50 km runners being bussed to Fort Erie for their start and the 50 mile division runners turning back some 10 km before the turnaround in Fort Erie.

Teason, of Coral Springs, FL, made his debut in 1995, winning the 50 mile division. Perhaps finding the ambiant temperature more refreshing than the forest fire stoked atmosphere he left at home, this year he torched Peter Holubar's 1993 course record of 3:30:00 by almost 18 minutes in the 50 km division.

No stranger to the 50 mile distance, Cherniak, of Cohoes, NY, won the 50 mile division outright in 1993.  Now five years older, she dropped a remarkable 25 minutes off the course record she set back then of 6:54.

As usual, the 109 starters enjoyed cooler temperatures, an overcast sky, and a refreshing wind from the north at the 6:00 am start (7:05 for the 50 km).  By 10:00 am, however, the cloud cover was burned off, the breeze extinguished, and the temperature soared to around 30C (86F).  The end result was a record number of finishers over the official 14 hour time limit.  Perhaps most dramatically affected was 19 year old speedster Ryne Melcher, who was only 10 minutes behind winner Victor Hickey at the 50 km turnaround, but fell to 1:24:00 off the pace in finishing second, and requiring medical attention at the finish.

Hickey from CFB Meaford, having already qualified for the Canadian 100 km team in Victoria earlier this year, was glad to be able to run conservatively in the prevailing conditions.

Bonita Neglia, of Breslau, ONT, ran 40 minutes off Deanna Lindsay's 1997 course record of 9:14:14 to take the women's 100 km prize, while Steve Webster, of West Olive, Michigan, took the men's 50 mile division in 6:17:24.

1997 Canadian 100 km team member Deanna Lindsay, from North York, ONT, paced the 50 km women all the way, only to be overcome in the last 10 km by eventual winner Cathy Kuenehan of Kitchener, ONT, whose 4:01:59 was only 100 seconds off the course record.

9 year old Taylor Harthun, who admitted feeling a little tired and sore after setting a new personal best of 7:59:27 in the 50 km, ran with his father in a "go as you please" manner.

Within hours of finishing, as they lounged about in the dining area of the upscale Queen's Landing Hotel and felt the cooling breezes wafting up from the marina on the Niagara River below, the 103 tired finishers' thoughts gradually turned from regrets about slow times and painful finishes to more anticipatory and optimistic hopes for the next race.
