2012 Ontario Ultra/Trail/50K Series Rules and Awards

1. Most of the series races are fixed-distance, which means that entrants run a specified distance such as 25k, 50k, 50 miles, etc.  However, a few of the series races are fixed-time, meaning that entrants run for a specified period of time such as 6 hours, 12 hours, etc.  In the fixed-time races, your finishing position is determined by how far you ran in the specified time period.  (Entrants run laps on a short course, while race officials keep a tally of each entrant’s laps).
  1. The Ultra Series consists of races of 50k or farther (events 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12) and fixed time races (events 4, 8, 11).  event list
  2. The Trail Series consists of trail races of distance 25k to 32k (events 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12).  event list
  3. The 50K Series consists of races of distance 50k to 56k (events 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12).  event list

2. Entry in any series race automatically registers the entrant in the Ultra Series, Trail Series and 50K Series.  There is no additional series fee or minimum number of races.

3. Series award categories are as follows:
A. Male up to and including age 39.
B. Male age 40 to 49.
C. Male age 50 and up.

E. Female age 40 to 49.
F. Female age 50 and up.
G. All Ultra Series race entrants.

4. For series award categories A to F:
  1. Qualification is based on the entrant’s age as of July 31, 2012.
  2. For the fixed distance races in the Ultra Series and the Trail Series, entrants will be given one point per km of race distance plus additional points based on the entrant’s finishing position relative to the number of starters in the race.  Points will be given to those who complete the distance within the time limit.  Points may be given to those who complete the distance after the time limit has been reached, but only if the race director approves of doing so.  Each race entrant bears sole responsibility for knowing the time limit.  Race results for those who do not complete the distance within the time limit are provided as a courtesy.  Providing of an entrant’s result in no way implies that the entrant will be given points.  Example of points calculation for a fixed-distance race
  3. For the fixed time races, entrants will be given one point per km of distance completed plus additional points based on the entrant’s finishing position relative to the number of starters in the race.
  4. Switching from one race to another race in a multiple-race event will not be permitted after the event has started.  If an entrant completes the race in which he/she was registered and then decides to participate in another race, points will be given only for the race in which the entrant was registered.
  5. For races in the Ultra Series, the highest six of twelve race point values accumulated by each entrant will be used to establish the entrant’s Age Award Points for that series.
  6. For races in the Trail Series, the highest five of nine race point values accumulated by each entrant will be used to establish the entrant’s Age Award Points for that series.

5. For series award category G, each entrant who is given finishing position points for eight or more races in the Ultra Series will receive a Norm Patenaude Award

6. For series award category H, prizes will be given to the male and female with the most total points (Ultra Cup Points), regardless of age category.  The Ontario Ultra Cup will be shared between the two winners.

   b. The highest five of nine race point values accumulated by each entrant will be used to establish the entrant’s 50K Challenge Cup Points.  Prizes will be given to the male and female with the most 50K Challenge Cup Points, regardless of age category.  The 50K Challenge Cup will be shared between the two winners.
