Standings at the completion of the eleven race series with
results from the Ascension 50 Km Trail Run, Bruzer Sportsgear Ganaraska 50 Km, Sulphur
Springs 50 Km Trail Run, Sri Chinmoy Kingston 6 Hour, Niagara 100km/50Mile/50Km, Damn Tuff
Ruff Bluff 50 Km Trail Run, Camp Heidelburg 50 Km Run, Bruce Trail Survival 33 Km Trail
Run, Haliburton 100Mile/50Mile/50Km, Ottawa Sri Chinmoy 24 Hour, and the Slough of Despond
50 Km Road Race.
In the category for Men Under 50, Victor Hickey, 41, an
officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, battled all year with 19 year old Ryne Melcher,
with the former eventually prevailing primarily on the strength of his performance at the
Ottawa 24 Hour. Heidelburg race director Tony Martin, 34, once again placed third, despite
a relatively stronger performance this year.
In the younger women's division, last year's sixth place
finisher Karin Westfahl got into the spirit of things, garnering an incredible (at least a
few years ago) 1440 points, good enough for third place in the open men, followed by
friend Kelly Rintoule and by Monica Scholz, who began her ultra career with the first race
of the Series, mostly out of curiosity as I understand it.
In the category for Men 50 and up, Ron Gehl continued his lock
on first place, which he has held every year since 1991 except 1994. Runner-up
Charles Upshall gave him a run for his money by doubling his point total from 1997, while
the indomitable Fred Davis became the first person outside Ontario to place. It is
worthy of note that Fred also did three 100 milers in sixteen days this year, in the
Series at Haliburton and Ottawa, then at Toledo.
Similarly, Haliburton RD Helen Malmberg continued to batter
the opposition, with also-rans Linda Hodkin and Marion Landry never in serious contention.
Interest in achieving the Norm Patenaude Award increased, with
16 participants completing the 9 events necessary to qualify, one more than the 8 events
the 14 runners did last year. And only 5 of the winners were repeating from last
year.
A new award was announced this year by sponsor Edward Sarson
Productions, the Sarson Award Trophy for the top male and female points winners overall
regardless of category. The most worthy inaugural year winners were Victor Hickey and
Karin Westfahl.
The final big stride forward was the creation of the Ontario
Ultra Series site on the World Wide Web. An estimated 5-10% of participants availed themselves of this site to download entry
forms, while race photos, results and Series standings were posted and available to all
within two or three days after each event.
Overall participation in the Series, the primary goal of the
Series founders, continued to increase unabated, with 1998 showing an average 15+ per cent
increase over 1997. As a benchmark, the author reminisces finishing tied for 9th
behind Andy Jones 1st place in the Sagamok 60 km race in 1990, and being dead last!

FINAL STANDINGS
Points were awarded on the basis of a first place finish receiving 100 with all other
finishers receiving a proportion of 100 based on the number of starters. One
additional point was awarded for each kilometer of each race completed. Only a
maximum of a runner's 9 best events were factored, as indicated by the asterisk.
